Need help with a Toyota repair.?

1998 Camry has check engine light on. Code shows exhaust gas recirculation inefficiency detected. I have checked the vacuum lines / connections and cannot find a loose connection or leak. I flat cannot afford to have a diagnosis / repair done professionally right now, and need this car to drive to work. It has failed the Texas vehicle inspection because of this, and I gotta get it fixed. It runs great. I can start replacing parts, but it is kind of a crap shoot, and the EGR valve is $160.00 by itself. Any serious comments would be welcome.|||4 cyl or 6 cyl Camry. 4 Cyl Camry you may have plugged egr ports or the vacuum tranducer is bad. 6 Cyl Camry the EGR vacuum regulator solenoid failed. or the egr ports are plugged. What is the code number ? What is the engine size?|||it is more than likely going to be the EGR valve .... since you said that you have already checked all the vacuum lines and connectors, it would almost have to be either the valve itself or the EGR passages in the intake under the valve may be getting clogged ..... the only way to tell for sure if they are clogging, is to remove the valve and look into the passages in the intake .... if they are clogging, you can partially clean them out by squirting a lot of carb or intake cleaner into the passage and then running a straightened out metal clotheshanger into the holes ..... this might fix the problem but if i had to bet money, i would say it's they valve itself or both causing the problem
