I just did a diagnostic on my 1999 Saturn SL2 and the code was p-1404 which is EGR exhaust gas recirculation?

What does this exactly mean and what can I do to fix it so my check engine light will go off.It will not hurt to drive it around for a few weeks with this problem will it?|||Jennifer the code P1404 that set your check engine lamp to come on means the Liner EGR valve on your engine stuck open at one point for a short time. This problem is caused by carbon build up under your EGR valve. This carbon will also at times work its way up into the base of the valve. The dealer and some auto repair shops will tell you they can remove the EGR valve and clean out the port under the valve and your good to go.This repair means your going to spend more money in a short time when the check engine lamp comes back on.The best way to correct this problem one time is to replace the EGR valve and have the port cleaned once the old valve is off.To save time and money you can buy the EGR valve and stop the repair shop from putting a mark up on the price of the valve.Once you have the new valve call around some of your local repair shops and get the best price. Some shops will charge more than others for the same thing. If your car is running ok this problem will not harm your engine till you get the repair done.Once you have the repair done the shop will clear the code from your engine computer and your done.I will post a link so you can see what the EGR valve looks like and the normal cost to expect.Best of luck Jennifer. http://www.partstrain.com/store/?PN=9291鈥?/a>
