2001 ford mustang 3.8 check eng lite on obd11 reader came up with code401?

code 401 in the book reads as follows (exhaust gas recirculation flow insufficient) what does this mean and where can the sensor for this problem be located. the car had been parked for three weeks prior to this lite coming on. the obd11 reader puts the light out but it comes back on after about 30k's.|||I agree with gearbox1 and JASON D. I would like to add that to verify the EGR is working, you install a handheld vacuum pump to supply your own vacuum to the EGR valve while the engine is idling. If engine idle becomes rough when you apply vacuum, the EGR valve is working. DPFE sensor failure is very common on all Ford products. Every Ford dealer should stock LOTS of them.|||This sensor tests your egr system for proper operation by accessing a port in front %26amp; behind the egr valve %26amp; sends voltage to the pcm which determines if the system is operational or not.

Neways, just replace this sensor (it is called a DPFE sensor or egr boost sensor). they get high amounts of condensation from the exhast %26amp; actually corode on the inside. very common prob on fords.|||code - 401 egr valve insuffient. EGR craps up on all cars even Chevy's

Replace EGR valve also, plain and simple, or you will be back later..|||Jason is correct... Actually this vehicle has one that is very known for issues.. You are looking at about $100 or so for the sensor and is a dealer only item.. but he is correct on the DPFE sensor (Ford base number is 9J460)|||they have been so much of a problem that ford has recalled several vehicles. i would recommend contacting the dealer and see if your vehicle falls under the recall. it probably is. you can probably get it fixed for free.|||if you have the metal dpfe bolted to the side on the intake plenum you need the updated dpfe sensor delta pressure feedback exhaust gas resurculation the updated dpfe you need is the black plastic ones you'll know its bad if you see alot of white powder come out of the ports also .gl2u
